March 16, 2017- Virginia Woman Unable To Adopt Because Of Criminal Record
A Virginia woman is challenging a law that states she cannot adopt for ten years because of her criminal record. The woman was arrested in 2009 when she was 21-years-old, for possession of heroin. At 28 now the woman is challenging the law she deems as unfair and antiquated. The woman is looking to adopt with her husband with whom she has a 5-year-old son. She has written numerous letters to lawmakers in Richmond in hopes to persuade legislators to shorten the time period or start case-by-case considerations for adoptions.
