Sheraden is a small neighborhood west of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Nearby communities include Crafton Heights, Elliott, Windgap, Chartiers City, and Esplen.

History Overview

Named after settler William Sheraden, the land was gifted in exchange for the naming rights for the sole purpose of building a railroad depot. Upon the agreement, the Sheraden Homestead was constructed between 1875 and 1885.

The Italianate architectural style of the Homestead still stands as the most notable building in Sheraden. Of the iconic architectural design, the twin sycamore trees that grow together to form an arch over the entry pathway are one of the most prominent characteristics that are well recognized across Pittsburgh.

Sheraden Homestead

The Sheraden Homestead was constructed on a 122-acre farmland in what was then Chartiers Township. William Sheraden and his family owned the property, and they built the farmhouse at a time of affluence. In 1857, William Sheraden bought the land, and by 1880, it was the region’s third most valuable farm.

William Sheraden began segmenting portions of his agricultural land in the late 1800s, selling parcels for residential construction. This resulted in the formation of a new area known as Sheraden or Sheradenville, which was established as a borough in 1894. In August 1900, William Sheraden passed, leaving the property to two of his daughters.

Neighborhood Facts

Sheraden became a popular destination for Irish and German immigrants to Pittsburgh.
However, when suburbanization took hold in the 1970s, Irish and Germans from Sheraden migrated to nearby neighborhoods.

Residents in the area flock to Sheraden Park for some outdoor activities and entertainment provided by the park with a swimming pool, picnic areas, playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, and ballfields.
