Manchester is a town located in Hartford County, with a total population of about 58,241 as stated in the United States Census in 2010.
History
Manchester dates back to the late 17th century when the land was occupied by the Podunk tribe of Native American Indians. Upon colonists settling on the land, it was named Orford Parish, which can still be seen on the gravestones of Revolutionary soldiers in the town cemetery.
Settlers were able to take advantage of the assortment of rivers and streams that provided water, fish, and power for the manufacturing industries. Through the expansion of the textile, paper, and lumber industries, the town evolved into an epic industrial hub.
Before Manchesters’ separation of boundaries, it included the land where East Hartford and West Hartford exist and was known as the town of Hartford up until 1783.

Arts & Culture
Manchester is home to the second-oldest continuously active pipe band in the United States, the Manchester Pipe Band, a grade 2 pipe band that was established in 1914 and has a Scottish background. Along with its musical background, Manchester also contains four unique museums.
- The Fire Museum; located in a restored 1901 firehouse.
- The Lutz Children’s Museum; a variety of interactive art, history, science, and nature exhibits for families to enjoy.
- The Old Manchester Museum; offers local history and the development of the manufacturing industries.
- The Cheney Homestead Museum; located in an 18th-century house that showcases artwork, period furniture, decor, and other fine pieces.
