Woodmere Art Museum
Checking out new museums is a great way to spend quality time with family, the adoption agency in Philadelphia, PA from AFTH has sponsored this post so you can learn more.
Built-in the 19th century, the beautiful stone mansion that houses the Woodmere Art Museum is dedicated to Philadelphia’s collection of art created by local artists.
The Museum opened to the public in 1910 after the six acres of land was transformed into a beautiful showcase of artwork by Charles Knox Smith, who purchased the land in 1898.
Collector of contemporary art, Smith, was also a civic leader that served on the Philadelphia Common Council.
Woodmere strives to follow Smith’s vision of putting together architecture and nature. In recent years, they have collected valuable pieces of outdoor sculptures by Harry Bertoia, Dina Wind, and Robinson Freudenthal.
The collection of Woodmere consists of more than 8,000 art pieces, and nine galleries provide exhibits and programs that serve adults and children.
Permanent Collection
The founder of Woodmere Art Museum, Charles Knox Smith, claimed that art collecting was a noble undertaking with a social, metaphysical, and patriotic aspect.
Many pieces of art depict tales that are specifically related to the war, such as the remarkable marble bust of Sarah Fisher Ames, Abraham Lincoln (n.d.), which is among Smith’s greatest artifacts.
Current exhibitions you can find are the Gilbert Lewis: Many Faces, Many Figures, Africa In The Arts Of Philadelphia: Bullock, Searles, and Twins Seven-Seven, Sculpture, and Nature, and Free Interpretation of Plant Forms.
The Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and is a great attraction for family and friends to visit. Plan a day and expect to spend the whole day admiring all the fascinating pieces of artwork all around the facility.
