History
The Children’s Museum ranks as the five oldest children’s museum in the nation since its founding in 1927. Located in Elizabeth Park in Hartford, this museum strives to provide visitors with life-long learning exhibitions through STEAM, nature, and the environment around us.
The museum contains a variety of exhibitions and additions that have been added throughout the years since its debut to the public. Here is a breakdown of the significant additions over the years:
- 1946 – The establishment of the Children’s Museum Preschool
- 1968 – The Gengras Planetarium Travelers Science Dome
- 1973 – Roaring Brook Nature Center joined the museum
- 1981 – The Wildlife Sanctuary

The Planetarium has been a part of the Hartford community for over 40 years. Known as the largest museum planetarium in Connecticut, it provides children with a full-dome, captivating show that creates a unique experience like no other.
