History

In 1685, several families discovered Danbury and settled from both Norwalk and Stamford, Connecticut. Of the settlers, Samuel Benedict, along with his brother James Benedict, James Beebe, and Judah Gregory purchased property from the Paquioque in 1685. Danbury held such a vital role during the Revolutionary War as a military supply hub for the Continental Army.

In 1822, the borough of Danbury became incorporated and then was reincorporated to a city in 1889. The busy city attracts various travelers from all around the world, who would come to see the traveling tours and shows with the most popular being Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.

During World War II, Danbury’s federal jail was one of several locations where members of the military were detained. One in every six convicts in federal prisons in the United States was a prisoner of war, and institutions like Danbury were suddenly flooded with highly educated individuals adept in social activism.

The Danbury Public Library was founded in 1869 and remains a staple in the community. Along with its notable library, Danbury is also home to a variety of churches, mosques, synagogues, and other religious establishments.
