Barry Square is a neighborhood within Hartford, Connecticut, just south of South Green and named after Father Michael Barry, who was the Roman Catholic priest for St. Augustine’s Church. The historic church was built in 1902 and is located on Campfield Avenue. Situated in what was originally a primarily Irish populated neighborhood, the church’s first congregation was primarily Irish immigrants that moved from County Kerry in Ireland in the early 1800s.
History
Because of the broad plains west of Campfield Avenue, the center section of the neighborhood functioned as a military encampment throughout both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Interestingly, the street got its name from the camp field that spanned south and east from the current Campfield branch of the Hartford Public Library.
Barry Square is home to a variety of historical places with so much architectural history and lore, such as The Collegiate Gothic architecture found at Trinity College. The area was previously called “Gallow Hill” because of its dark past but has since moved its location in 1872. Before moving to its current location, Trinity College was placed near the Connecticut State Capitol in downtown Hartford up until 1823.
When the original burying site in Hartford became overcrowded, the Old South Burying Ground on Maple Avenue was constructed and then founded in 1770; and is known as the city’s second-oldest cemetery. The Institute of Living, formerly known as the Hartford Retreat for the Insane, was founded in 1822.
Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted designed the grounds as a 35-acre park-like campus, making it one of the country’s oldest mental treatment institutions and now functions as patient treatment, research, and education center in the disciplines of behavioral, psychiatric, and addiction problems as part of Hartford Hospital.
