The Connecticut Museum holds a large collection of the state’s government, military, and industrial history dating back to the Colonial era up until the present day. The Museum is housed across the street from Connecticut’s State Capitol building in Hartford, in the historic and beautifully renovated 1910 State Library and Supreme Court building.
The Museum has three connecting exhibition areas, including a Memorial Hall that showcases a collection of portraits of the past Connecticut Governors.
Memorial Hall in the Museum also displays a variety of historical documents such as:
- the 1818 State Constitution
- the 1964 State Constitution
- the State’s 1662 Royal Charter
- the 1639 Fundamental Orders
Since 1910, the Museum of Connecticut History has preserved and exhibited artifacts from Connecticut’s cultural, economic, and military history.
Exhibits On Display
As mentioned above, one of the most iconic exhibits to see is Memorial Hall’s State of Connecticut collection of Governors’ Portraits. Some of the artists represented in the portrait collection are pieces of work from:
- George Wright
- Charles N. Flagg
- Ralph Earle
- Dean Keller
- Herbert Abrams
There is an assortment of other exhibits for visitors to explore, like the Freedom Trail Quilts, Mitchelson Coin Collection, The Connecticut Collections, Liberties and Legends, The Cold Firearms Collection, etc.
