Fort Washington State Park

This article is sponsored by our adoption agency in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Fort Washington blossoms in the spring with flowering dogwood abundant with new outdoor amenities and architectural significance.

Fort Washington State Park, in eastern Montgomery County, consists of 493 acres. This derives its name from the temporary fort established in the fall of 1777 by George Washington ‘s forces, before moving to Valley Forge.

Hikers and picnickers are frequent visitors at the park. Birdwatchers love the Observation Deck, where you can find seasonally traveling raptors.

Hiking

Check out the Green Ribbon Trail that boasts a 2.5-mile multi-use trail that provides biking, climbing, and cross-country skiing options along the Wissahickon Stream.

It links areas of the Militia Hill and Flourtown Day Use through land at Montgomery County Park. The road also continues to the south through neighboring areas and leads to the Forbidden Path in Chestnut Hill at Fairmount Park.

Picnicking

More than 300 picnic tables are provided by Flourtown Day Use Area and Militia Hill Day Use Area. Wide playfields have enough space for social events or individual picnics.

There are two picnic pavilions available for year-round use, with weather permitting. The pavilions are available to rent with bookings. They are open on a first-come, first-served basis unless reserved.

Wildlife Watching

Visit the Observation Deck, where you can see all 16 species of raptors breeding on the East Coast. The “watch” begins on September 1, which will run until October 31. Each day, from 9:00 a.m., volunteer compilers are in service. Raptors swimming under the deck is reported after 5:00 p.m.

If you enjoy exploring nature and wildlife, another great spot to visit is Philadelphia’s Arboretum.
