Park History
The local Lenape people once used the property that is now Tacony Creek Park as a hunting ground. They started to build mills and farms along the creek when Europeans arrived, eliminating much of the forest.
By 1915, the City of Philadelphia maintained this green-space as a parkland to preserve the stream’s protection. Half of the park consists of woodland and meadows today, and several species of birds and other animals.
The other half is the Juniata Golf Course, which has been operating since 1927 and is located at the park’s southern end.
Things To Do
The park boasts 3.2 miles of paved walkways for runners, bicyclists, and explorers. The trail runs throughout the park’s entire length and is open to the public from dusk to dawn. You can find over 10 different access points in neighboring areas such as Feltonville, Lawncrest, Juniata, Frankford, and Northwood along the trail.
The historic park provides visitors with entertaining, engaging activities for families to take advantage of, such as nature and bird walks, planting, cleanups, block parties, and games such as “Outside & Seek.”
