Andy Warhol
Mr. Warhol was a renowned American artist, filmmaker, and leading Pop art movement advocator in the 1960s. He ventured into a diverse array of art pieces, including performance art, filmmaking, multimedia projections, and poetry, and blurred the boundaries between fine art and popular aesthetics controversially.
He spent his career working with great and emerging artists such as Robert Rauschenberg to Jasper Johns, who inspired him to expand his own artistic abilities.
History
One of four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, The Warhol joined as a collaborative project back in 1989 between The Andy Warhol Foundation, Dia Art Foundation, and Carnegie Institute.
The establishment itself was originally built in 1911 and was used as a distribution center before it underwent major renovations by architect Richard Gluckman. Gluckman reinvented the space that featured an entire seven floors of space perfect for a huge selection of exhibitions. Underground, he added a conservation lab and education studio.
Collections
As you can imagine, the largest collection at the Warhol consists of archival artworks and other pieces and materials from Warhol’s own collection. From his early student work to modern art portraits and collaborations, the entire spectrum of Warhol’s career is covered by paintings, sketches, advertising images, sculptures, prints, photos, wallpapers, sketchbooks, and books. Of his collection, there are over 350 preserved Warhol films and more than 4,000 videos.
Community Programs
The Warhol remains a hub for working with a diverse range of networks, programs, communities, and partnerships to provide resources for those interested in Pop Art. Art educators offer workshops in a variety of settings and age groups perfect for everyone.
