Carnegie is a borough within Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, approximately 5 miles from Pittsburgh. Chartiers Creek flows through the borough’s heart, and one of its tributaries, Campbells Run, connects with the creek. Carnegie is bordered on the north by Rosslyn Farms, on the east, south, and southwest by Scott Township, on the west by Collier Township, and on the northwest by Robinson Township.
History
The borough was named after Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish-American philanthropist and industrialist during the mid to late 19th Century. Carnegie was one of the wealthiest Americans in history, having pioneered the rise of the American steel industry in the late 1800s. He built a total of 2,509 Carnegie libraries between 1883 to 1929. One of those libraries was graciously given to the borough of Carnegie, hence the reason the area was named after him.
20th Century
Many communities were mined for coal at one point or another. Steel factories like Superior Steel and Union Electric Steel were the primary employment. Early in the twentieth Century, Carnegie had a construction site with links to various railways, notably the Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal train and the Pennsylvania Railroad. In the 1970s, the shutdown of major steel mills in and around Pittsburgh, such as J & L, hurt Carnegie financially.
21st Century
Hurricane Ivan flooded Carnegie in 2004, causing significant damage to the city. A lot of the borough’s business district and the borough’s Roman Catholic churches were destroyed or damaged. However, since 2014, Carnegie’s Main Street has seen a resurgence with the addition of several new eateries and small shops.
Community Activities
Carnegie is a walkable neighborhood with a Main Street full of fascinating and distinctive shops and eateries. A dog park, playground, tennis courts, multiple sports fields, walking pathways, and Pitcher Skate Park are all located in the park.
