The adoption agency in Wayne has kindly sponsored the information in this article for those interested in learning about the history and establishment of the unincorporated community of Wayne.
Local Demographics
Wayne is known as one of the wealthiest areas in the nation, located in Delaware County, on the Main Line, alongside a series of upscale Philadelphia suburbs. A part of Radnor Township, Wayne also pushes its boundaries into both Tredyffrin Township and Upper Merion Township.
The community is neither an incorporated area nor a CDP; therefore, all data on their population and households is based on their zip code. The most recent census of 2010 stated that there was an estimated population of 32,225 people, with around 12,754 households.
Community History
Named after General Anthony Wayne, the community development was initiated upon the establishment of Cleaver’s Landing, a railroad stop built in the middle of Wayne. Shortly after, approximately 293 acres of land was purchased by J.H. Askin, where he built a mansion he called “Louella,” a merge between his two daughters’ names Lousia and Ella. The mansion featured 80 rooms, with an exterior built with stone and a porch that overlooked the estate’s lawn.
In 1880, a banker named A.J. Drexel purchased the land on which the mansion was built, including surrounding areas. Upon new ownership, Drexel and his partner Childs renamed the mansion to the Wayne Estate. Homes in the area slowly began to spread out and populate as well as a hotel that was built not too long after.
Over the years, the community has continued to grow in both wealth and population. If you found this article interesting, visit our upcoming blog on the history of Paoli, a town nearby.
