Located in central Connecticut, Farmington is a town within Hartford County, only 10 miles from the capital and about a two-hour drive to both Boston, MA and New York City, NY. The area is known as the hub for several different large corporations such a Carvel, an American ice cream franchise, and Otis Elevator Company.
History
The Tunxis Indian tribe was the first to settle in Farmington. Residents of Hartford founded a colony of English immigrants in 1640, establishing Farmington, the oldest urban town west of the Connecticut River and one of the state’s oldest communities. One of the reasons that brought settlers to the area was the rich soil, perfect for agriculture, and the proximity to the river. In 1645, the town and river were given their current names and were later expanded multiple times, eventually becoming the largest in the Connecticut Colony. Because of its position inside a farming region, the town was given the name “Farmington.”
Farmington has a long and illustrious history in New England. Colonial estates surround Main Street in the historic village portion, some dating back to the 17th century. Several times during the Revolutionary War, George Washington walked through Farmington, referring to it as “the village of pretty houses.” Later on, French forces led by General Rochambeau were stationed in Farmington on their way to Westchester County to assist General Washington’s army.
In the 19th century, a number of Farmington residents used their homes as “safe houses” and helped slaves escape using the Underground Railroad. During this time era, the borough became known as “Grand Central Station,” for the number of slaves they helped and guided over time.
