History
East Falls is named after the east side of the Schuylkill Falls near the Schuylkill River. The waterfall meets where the river ends at the bottom of the coastal line into the center of Philadelphia. During the early colonial era, the settlement was decided based on the path of the river that later became what is known as Germantown and Ridge Avenue today.
Josiah White and Erskine Hazard used the power of the waterfall to build a foundry, wire mill, and nail factory before the War of 1812. Because of this, the foundation of the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company was established and created many more jobs during the American Industrial Revolution.
