While Connecticut may be a beautiful state year-round, we think it reaches the height of its natural beauty during the fall. Our Glastonbury adoption professionals love taking part in a variety of fall activities throughout the state during September and October. We think these outdoor festive activities are a perfect way to spend a fall weekend together as a family. Here are some of our favorite autumn activities in and around the Glastonbury area:
Connecticut River Ferry
Running along the Connecticut River, the Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry is the oldest continuously operating ferry service in the United States. On a nice fall day, we love taking rides on the ferry and taking in the fall hues of red, orange, and yellow as the leaves have begun to change. The original ferry dates all the way back to 1655 and was a small raft that was pushed across the river using small poles. During its early history, the ferry service was one of the most important transportation services in Connecticut.
Cornfest
Each year, the town of Wethersfield holds an event called Cornfest to celebrate the end of summer and beginning of autumn. In 2018, the event was held on September 22 on the Broad Street Green from 10 am-5 pm. This family-friendly event includes plenty of fun activities for the kids, a wide selection of excellent local food vendors, and family-friendly entertainment like live music and performances. In 2018, Cornfest added new events like a cornhole tournament and a scavenger hunt.
Apple Picking at Belltown Hill Orchards
For generations, American families have been enjoying autumn trips to orchards for picking apples and other produce. Belltown Hill Orchards in South Glastonbury is one of our favorite places to go for this classic family fall activity. The picturesque orchard rests in rolling hills and visitors can pick their own apples and other produce or buy pies, donuts, and apple fritters at the bakery. You can find 24 different varieties of apples for picking here. This orchard also has a farm market.
Pumpkin Picking at Rose’s Berry Farm
Also located in South Glastonbury, Rose’s Berry Farm is our go-to choice for another classic family fall activity – picking pumpkins. This berry farm has been in operation since 1908 and is a Glastonbury staple. Along with pumpkins, you can pick your own strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, apples, pears, peaches, and Christmas trees, depending on what time of year you visit.
Lyman Orchards Corn Maze
Each fall, Lyman Orchards holds a corn maze from early September through early November. In 2018, the theme was Dancing with the Stars. The maze stretches for over two miles of pathways surrounded by towering corn stalks. $1 of every admission to the Corn Maze goes to the American Cancer Society.
