East Hartford is a town within Hartford County in Connecticut along the Connecticut River. The city is home to the Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field, holding up to 40,000 individuals.
History
During the early 1600s, Europeans first discovered the land where East Hartford sat and was initially inhabited by the River Tribes, especially the Podunks tribe that occupied that specific area. In 1659, the land was purchased from the Podunk Indians by Thomas Burnham, which covers East Hartford and South Windsor.
In 1783, East Hartford was incorporated as its own individual town, and later Manchester separated as well in 1823. Residents began forming tax districts for fire protection, street lighting, sanitation, and other public works upgrades in the late 1800s.
East Hartford’s economy has always been based on agriculture, with tobacco being the most important crop. This all shifted in 1929, when Frederick Rentschler, the CEO of Pratt & Whitney, relocated operations from Hartford to a massive 1,100-acre facility in East Hartford. Rentschler Field, a tiny airfield that operated from 1931 until 1999, was located on the property and first used for test flights and maintenance, then industrial aviation.
