New Britain is a larger city in Hartford County, located about 9 miles southwest of the state capital, Hartford, and encompasses a larger population of Hartford County. It is also home to the two well-known schools, Charter Oak State College and Central Connecticut State University.
Because of its heritage as a production hub and the headquarters of Stanley Black & Decker, the area is known as “Hardware City.” The city is jokingly referred to as “New Britski” because of its strong Polish community.
During the 19th and early 20th century, the area was known for its agriculture, and prominent locations on the National Register of Historic Places include Walnut Hill Park, constructed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, and Downtown New Britain.
Early History
New Britain was established in 1687, and in 1754, it was organized as a new parish, the New Britain Society. It was later established in 1850 as a township and incorporated as a city in 1871, after splitting from the neighboring town of Farmington, Connecticut.
New Britain is well-known for its large manufacturing presence for hardware from big-name companies such as The Stanley Works, Landers, Frary & Clark, P&F Corbin Company, and North & Judd, to name a few. This dates back to 1843 when Frederick Trent Stanley founded Stanley’s Bolt Manufactory, designed to built iron hardware and door bolts.
Hardware companies such as these mentioned were booming during the 19th and 20th centuries and continue to remain a huge source of income for the city.
