Located within Northeast Philadelphia, Juniata, also known as Juniata Park, is home to a large population of working-class Caucasian and Hispanic families. The bordering neighborhoods consist of Frankford, Felton, Harrowgate, and Port Richmond.
History
Before the establishment of Juniata in the early 1920s, the area was originally mainly farmland. The first row homes were constructed in Juniata Park in the mid-1920s near Castor Avenue and Luzerne Street and later expanded outward as the residential community grew exponentially over the next century.
Demographics
Juniata Park had a diverse population when it was primarily constructed in the 1920s and 1930s, with German bakeries and delicatessen/grocery businesses and Jewish grocery and pharmacy stores. The community was also known for holding up to its strong sense of society as a union.
Statistics from the Census of 2010 shared that there was an estimated population of about 13,617 people residing in the community. Of those people, the racial diversity of the area is as follows:
- 59.6% Hispanic
- 18.1% White
- 14.5% Black
- 7.7% Asian or other races
Constructions Within The Community
Within Juniata, residents take advantage of the Market-Frankford Line train stop at Erie-Torresdale Station. Along with the train station, there are tons of retail and commercial buildings lining the three main streets Hunting Park, Erie, and Castor Avenue.
