The first-class township of Radnor is located in Delaware County and is one of Pennsylvania’s oldest municipalities. Along with being the oldest, it is also the largest in Delaware County by land and the 4th largest by population, right after Darby Township, Haverford Township, and Chester.
History
Dating back to 1681, William Penn sold 5,000 acres of land to purchaser Richard Davies. Tons of pieces of land were sold off to other purchasers, which encompass what is Radnor Township today. The township was previously part of the Welsh Tract, which is how they obtained their name, derived from Radnorshire in Whales, United Kingdom.
18th Century
The first toll road was built running through Radnor Township, called Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike, in 1794. The toll road was designed to connect Philadephia to Lancaster, allowing an easier commute for residents.
19th & 20th Century
American published George W. Childs purchased the property in the town of Louella in the western section of Radnor Township in the 1880s, renamed the place Wayne, Pennsylvania, and developed one of the earliest suburban projects in the United States.
Demographics
Information from the United States Census of 2010 shared the racial diversity of Radnor, making up the following:
- 85.8% White
- 3% Hispanic or Latino
- 3.9% African American
- 7.9& Asian
- 0.2% Native American
The same statistics share that there was an estimated 10,347 households, with a household size being 2.39 and the average family size being about 3.08.
