The Philadelphia Museum of Art stands as a landmark building that homes thousands of world-renowned collections of art. Through educational materials and creative displays, the Museum brings life to the arts and helps others discover how to express their feelings through the beauty of the artwork.

History

After the great Centennial Exhibition of 1876, the Museum continued as a Memorial Hall legacy in Fairmount Park.

The collection of items, decorative arts, paintings, and ceramics, quickly grew over the decades into quite a large assortment of historical objects. Books, including antique furniture, enamels, carved ivories, jewelry, metalwork, glass, pottery, porcelain, textiles, and paintings, were also among the earliest acquisitions of the Museum.

From the 1920s, the Museum expanded into a new building on Fairmount, today known as the Main Building, and continued to grow their collection of historical objects well into the 1930s and through the 80s.

During the 1990s, the Museum went through a major upgrade in technological equipment and enhancements to help transition them into the 21st century. Today, the staff continues to educate visitors on the history of the museum, along with all the fascinating artifacts and artworks they’ve collected along the way.

Visit

Make the most of your visit to the Museum and take advantage of the variety of things to do and places to see. We recommend spending the full day at the Museum and checking out the Japanese Teahouse, Sculpture Garden, Gilded Age Drawing Room, art gallery rooms, and the latest exhibitions on display.
