Located in Germantown, Awbury Arboretum reveals beautiful greenery encompassed with a vast amount of rich history. For almost 100 years, the 55-acre historic landscape has been open to the public free of charge and known as a public park.
History
Awbury Arboretum once belonged to the Cope family as their summer home in Germantown in 1852. The home acquired its name after Avebury, England, the home from which the family immigrated from.
As the years went by, the summer home soon turned into a year-round home for the extended Cope family. A variety of Victorian and Colonial Revival houses were built around the Awbury home, but since the Cope family privately owned the house, it remained untouched.
With the advice of the celebrated horticulturalist William Saunders, builder of the National Cemetery at the Gettysburg Battlefield and of the Capitol grounds in Washington, D.C., Awbury’s grounds were laid out in the English landscape garden tradition in the 19th century.
In 1916, members of the Cope family decided to create the Arboretum caused by concerns for the preservation of the grand piece of land. The purpose of the Arboretum was for the “quiet enjoyment of nature” and educational purposes.
Today, the breathtaking 55-acres of lush landscaping remains the largest island of open space in Germantown, Pennsylvania.
The grounds of the Arboretum contain open grasslands, ponds, forests, and flowerbeds. Thousands of trees, many more than a century old, give tourists the opportunity to get to know more than 200 species, including the grand River Birch.
