The borough of East Pittsburgh can be found on the east side of Turtle Creek, which connects down to the Monongahela River. Located within the borough, the George Westinghouse Memorial Bridge stands tall as an iconic piece of the area. East Pittsburgh has four borders including North Braddock, Chalfant, Turtle Creek, and North Versailles Township.

History

East Pittsburgh has been a part of some monumental times in history such as the establishment of the first radion station KDKA (AM) in 1920. The Westinghouse Electric Corporation and engineer and inventor Vladimir Zworykin in East Pittsburgh hosted an early demonstration of a new media in 1928 and was eventually renamed television.

In the mid-1900s, the borough only had the East Pittsburgh School District that comprised of Bessemer Avenue Elementary School and East Pittsburgh Junior & High School with the mascot for the high school being the Shamrock. In the late 1970s, the school district was merged with another, Turtle Creek School District, the neighboring town.

Demographics

The United States Census of 2000 shared that there were an estimated 2,017 individuals, 936, households and 496 families that resided within East Pittsburgh. Of the households, about 28% had children under the age of 18, about 27% were married couples, about 43% were single individuals, and about 18% were individuals living alone above the age of 65.

Of that population, the racial diversity was split into the following statistics:

  • 76.10% White
  • 20.92% Black or African American
  • 0.35% Native American
  • 0.10% Asian
  • 0.05% Pacific Islander
  • 0.50% Hispanic or Latino
  • 2.18% other races

The median household income was about $21,286 and the family median income was a little bit more at $32,037.
