The Philadelphia Zoo

When it first opened its gates in 1874, The Philadelphia Zoo became America’s first. Today, the zoo has more than 1,300 rare and endangered animals, and its attendance is approximately 1.35 million visitors a year! Unique to the Philadelphia Zoo are its amazing attractions like the Lorikeet Encounter where guests feed the birds nectar by hand, and the 6ABC Zoo Balloon –a tethered hot air balloonride. From lions and leopards, giraffes and gorillas, penguins and polar bears, to peacocks that roam free throughout the park, The Philadelphia Zoo has the perfect exhibit for every animal lover.

Known as the Children’s Museum of Philadelphia, The Please Touch Museum was the first in the nation that catered to families with children under the age of 10. True experts of learning through play, their exhibits, theaters, and art programs are designed to stimulate young minds and have drawn families from all over the world.One of the most popular activities in the City Capers’ exhibit is The Shoprite Supermarket – a full-service grocery store for kids. Children take turns making shopping lists, picking out groceries, visiting the checkout to pretend pay, and bag their “purchases”. Another museum must-see lies in Hamilton Hall where guests find a 40-foot replica of Statue of Liberty’s Arm and Torch, sculpted entirely out of children’s toys, games and found objects. After more than three decades of operation, the Please Touch Museum remains true to its mission of “enriching the lives of children by creating learning opportunities through play.”

The Franklin Institute

Founded in honor of America’s first scientist, Benjamin Franklin, The Franklin Institute is one of the oldest science centers in the country.  Exhibits at the museum are interactive and fun for all ages; science comes to life in their activities that cover space, technology, natural sciences and more. Visit their interactive map to explore expeditions and plan your visit. Guests to the institute can stargaze in the planetarium, test Newton’s Laws of Motion by playing with pulleys, prisms and pendulums, scale an 18-foot-tall neural climb, or explore the insides of a two-story model Giant Heart.

It is recommended guests purchase tickets to any additional exhibits in advance. Prices for entrance to additional exhibits will vary.General Admission to The Franklin Institute includes access to three floors of hands-on and fun science exhibits including core interactive exhibits, Live Science programs, the Joel N. Bloom Observatory, and one show in the Fels Planetarium.

Independence Visitors Center

The only thing more well-known than a signature Philadelphia cheese steak are the restaurants you go to eat one. Spend a day at Suburban Square – a luxurious outdoor shopping mall, and enjoy a meal at Sabrina’s Café. Grab food to-go at Whole Foods or Trader Joes and spend the day outside at a park. Free on a weekend during the summer months? First Friday is an arts celebration held on the first Friday of every month where guests experience local art. Art galleries open their doors, and performers line the streets to dance, play instruments, and sing.
