Summertime is our favorite part of the year in Philadelphia. The city comes alive with a wide selection of outdoor events and attractions, including various beer gardens, outdoor movies, festivals, and more. Over the past few years, our Philadelphia adoption agents have grown fond of the Blue Cross Riverrink Summerfest. Set on the banks of the Delaware River and just down the street from another one of our favorite Philly summer destinations (Spruce Street Harbor Park), Summerfest allows you to enjoy all of your family’s favorite boardwalk and carnival activities all summer long, without leaving the city. Some of our favorite things to do at Blue Cross Riverrink Summerfest include:

The Midway

The Midway debuted last summer – the third year of Summerfest. A walk along here feels like you’re at the Jersey Shore, even though you’re still in the heart of Philadelphia. Notable features include a 60-foot Ferris wheel, a carousel, and all of your favorite classic boardwalk games. The bright lights from this section really make the Riverrink stand out against the night sky, and the Ben Franklin Bridge offers a beautiful backdrop.

Miniature Beach

The area surrounding the skating rink is a miniature beach-like landscape, complete with sand, lounge chairs, and an arcade. This is also the section to go to if you’re hungry, as you can find some popular summer and Philadelphia treats here, including local favorites like Chickie’s and Pete’s Waterfront Crabshack and the Franklin Fountain Clubhouse Cabin. There are also several bars serving up a wide selection of delicious beers and cocktails.

Some of our favorite treats to munch on here include:

  • Hot dogs
  • Pizza
  • Fried Oreos
  • Deep-fried scrapple
  • Deep-fried Tastykake cupcakes

Lodge

Summerfest features a boathouse-styled lodge, with a 200-seat capacity bar and restaurant featuring an extensive menu of delectable bar food, craft beers, and summer cocktails. This is a great play to enjoy a summer family dinner, with spectacular views of the Delaware River and Ben Franklin Bridge.

Games

Summerfest has plenty of games which make for some fun competition between friends and family. The playscape and arcade are always big hits with the kids. If you’re looking for a fun game that kids and parents can enjoy together, miniature golf is always a blast. They have a nine-hole course right beside the roller skating rink. All nine holes were designed by a local artist using recycled materials.

Skating

Of course, roller skating is the main attraction of Riverrink Summerfest. Rent a pair of skates or bring your own, and enjoy zipping around the rink while surrounded by colorful lights, carnival rides and games, and the fun atmosphere of this fantastic Philly summer destination. We also recommend coming back for ice skating at Blue Cross Riverrink Winterfest.
