Brewerytown is located within North Philadelphia, along the eastern bank of the Schuylkill River. As you can imagine, the area was given its name in the late 19th century because of the number of breweries established within the town borders. Though it now encompasses primarily residential areas, it still maintains its name and grows as a community.
History
The oldest evidence of this lineage may be seen on maps from the 1860s, which identify a number of modest German breweries and distillation plants in the area. These businesses thrived thanks to their proximity to the river and neighboring farms, and as demand grew, so did development in Brewerytown. It became known as a strong German community by the early twentieth century. Much of the early twentieth-century growth was overseen by architect Otto Wolf, who managed the construction of over 60 structures in the region, giving the residences, saloons, and breweries a unique German character.
At its height, Philadelphia had 700 breweries, many of which were concentrated in a ten-block area known as Brewerytown. Unfortunately, by 1987, almost every brewer had closed down due to the collapse of the local industry later in the twentieth century, which was sparked by the advent of Prohibition in the United States, with beer production shifting mostly to the Midwest. The industry has gradually returned to the city, although at a fraction of its former size.
