History

On November 25, 1881, Andrew Carnegie wrote a letter to the Mayor of Pittsburgh offering to donate $250,000 to build a free library for Pittsburgh residents. After some additional discussions, Mr. Carnegie agreed to increase the investment to $1 million to build one main library and 5 neighboring branches.

More than a century ago, Andrew Carnegie felt that funding a public library was the greatest contribution citizens of this city could make. He intentionally avoided supporting the library’s continuing operations when he generously provided capital funds to construct the initial library buildings.

Since its establishment in 1895, Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Library has continued to create community, encourage learning, and provide equal access to residents with all skills, abilities, and backgrounds.
