Just south of the Monogahela River, South Side Flats is a neighborhood full of several smaller communities within Pittsburgh, PA. The area features one of the highest concentrations of 19th-century homes in the city, prompting outsiders to refer to it as the city’s Georgetown. Not only does the area feature historic homes, but it also has quite the nightlife for residents and visitors, as well as plenty of restaurants, attractions, and places to visit.
History
Major John Ormsby was awarded the South Side and most of the surrounding slopes in 1763 in exchange for his aid in the construction of Fort Pitt. Ormsby had erected an estate on these properties by the 1770s, as well as a ferry to connect his residence to the city of Pittsburgh. In the late 1800s, the South Side was comprised of several smaller areas, including Birmingham, East Birmingham, Orsmby, South Pittsburgh, and Monongahela.
Benjamin Franklin Jones purchased a South Side iron mill in 1850. During the 1873 depression, he formed a company with James H. Laughlin, a well-known banker. Jones and Laughlin Steel Company would go on to become the largest employer on the South Side. It would employ nearly 15,000 people by 1910 and undergo expansion in the mid-1900s.
The bulk of the employees who had arrived in the region were Eastern European immigrants. They made their homes on the South Side’s Flats and Slopes, bringing much of their culture and customs with them. The South Side still has a large number of Eastern European churches, clubs, and pubs.
