Helen S. Kaman Rose Garden

The Elizabeth Park rose garden maintains its status as the United States’ first public rose garden and the country’s third-largest rose garden today. Located in the center of Elizabeth Park, the rose garden was designed in 1903 by Theodore Wirth.

The garden opened to the public in 1904 and offered guests 190 varieties of roses from the start. Over the next few decades, the rose garden grew to display almost 1,000 different types of roses. The rose garden is maintained by the Conservancy that relies on donations of over $100,000 annually to upkeep the garden with the best staff of rose experts, gardeners, contractors, and other maintenance.

History

The original garden was located in what was called “the square” that contained an acre of land with 132 types of roses. The design of the rose beds was created by Mr. Wirth and remains the same today with the square in the center, with a larger circle surrounding it followed by eight different pathways around the garden.

Two more gardens were added several years later that increased the landscape to 2.5 acres of rose gardens with 475 beds. Visitors can find over 15,000 rose bushes with 800 types of roses to discover with all unique scents and variances.

Visit

Elizabeth Park is open to the public free of charge from sunrise to sunset daily. The Conservatory does accept donations and provides a house café for visitors to enjoy. The Pond House Café, located inside the park, offers guests a choice of fresh organic menu items with an eclectic flair.
