Our Germantown adoption agency encourages family and friends to spend the weekend exploring historic sites such as the one discussed in this article, provided by AFTH.
The Johnson House Historic site is an underground railroad station and house museum that represents the people in the community and what they’ve created over the years. The museum provides interactive and educational exhibits and opportunities that promote the preservation of the historic integrity of the house and surrounding grounds.
History
The historic home was originally built in 1768 as a wedding present for John Johnson Jr., son of Dutch immigrant John Johnson. The Johnson family operated a flourishing tannery business on their farmed land, called Quakers.
Since its establishment, narratives that encompass the injustices of slavery and the risks of war; religious freedom, advocacy and human rights; political intrigue and ideological differences; and dignity and kindness have unfolded inside the walls of the Johnson House, and have been carefully interpreted and retained to educate and inform visitors today.
From its beginnings as a manor in the 1700s to its significant role with the Underground Railroad in the 1800s, the Johnson House continues to symbolize independence and civil rights while upholding the value of community with historical preservation and its educational institution.
Visit
The Johnson House is located on Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia, PA. Visitors have the opportunity to take a step back in time and explore the lives of black and white men and women during enslavement and the fight for freedom.
Through the exhibits, you’ll trace the history of enslaved Africans who traveled to receive their freedom along with the struggles they experienced along the way. As you journey through history and embrace all the knowledge, you’ll leave the museum with a new-found awareness of the past to help guide you into the future.
