Independence Seaport Museum is an interactive museum that explores the maritime heritage of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
History
Founded in 1960 as the Philadelphia Maritime Museum, it has become a star asset of Philadelphia’s waterfront. In 1995, The Philadelphia Maritime Museum was renamed as the Independence Seaport Museum after its dedication to exploring the Delaware River’s maritime history.
River Alive!
The Museum’s goal is to deepen the understanding, appreciation, and experience of the city’s waterways through the use of science, history, and art. River Alive! is a 4,000 square foot exhibit that opened in November of 2018. The exhibition analyzes how the Delaware River is used for water, food, and recreation by millions of people.
The exhibit contains an immersive River Spectrum Wall that is designed to project the evolution of the watershed environment. The Nature’s Highway Theatre and Soundscape is another great display where visitors have the chance to dress up like wildlife.
The space even features the Citizen Lab with hands-on, indoor-outdoor experiments and the Fisharium, which includes habitats containing fish that are native to the watershed of the Delaware River.

Guests can also sign up for the Workshop on the Water, where museumgoers will have the opportunity to see artisans create, build, and restore traditional wooden boats.
