Allegheny West is an ethnically diverse neighborhood in North Philadelphia that borders Strawberry Mansion, East Falls, and Nicetown-Tioga. Like many other North Philadelphia districts, Allegheny West is largely an impoverished African-American community that has seen post-industrial collapse and lack of investment. Between 1990 and 2000, it had one of the most significant population declines of any Philadelphia neighborhood.
Demographics
The 2010 United States Census share the racial diversity of the neighborhood as:
- 97.5% African American
- 0.8% Hispanic or Latino
- 0.7% White
- 0.2% Asian
- 0.8% two or more races.
Allegheny West has a reasonably priced housing market with a median home sale price of about $26,450 based on the 2005 United States Census. Prices in 2005 were marked as some of the lowest costs for housing throughout all the zip codes in Philadelphia.
Swampoodle
What is Swampoodle, you may ask? Well, it’s one of the old-school names of a portion of the Allegheny West neighborhood. The borders of Swampoodle were separated along the three railroad lines that stem from Lehigh Avenues through to 22nd Streets. The neighborhood was known as the home of the Connie Mack Stadium.
There are numerous theories as to how the Swampoodle neighborhood got its nickname. According to one source, the name alludes to the swampiness and recurring accumulation of puddles around 22nd Street and Lehigh Avenue.
