New Haven is considered the second-largest city in all of Connecticut, right after Bridgeport. Its located along the New Haven Harbor and is part of the New York metropolitan area. It has a substantially large population of about 129,779, as stated from the 2010 United States Census.
History
New Haven was one of America’s first planned cities. Eight streets were laid out in a four-by-four grid a year after it was established by English Puritans in 1638, establishing what is known as the “Nine Square Plan.” Today, the “Nine Square Plan” is designated as a National Planning Landmark by the American Planning Association.
Before the European settlements, New Haven was originally the home to the Quinnipiac tribe, who lived off the fishing and farming on the coast. They built villages along the harbor to allow for easy farming and travel. In 1614, the area was explored by Adriaen Block, who set up a trading system between the Dutch and the Native American tribe.
Over two decades later, in 1637, a small group of Puritans arrived at the New Haven harbor and eventually settled there under the leadership of Reverend John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton.
18th Century
New Haven was incorporated as a city in 1784, and its first mayor was Roger Sherman, a signer of the Constitution and author of the “Connecticut Compromise.” Eli Whitney, a Yale graduate who stayed in New Haven to grow the cotton gin and develop a gun-manufacturing factory along the Hamden town line, brought the city wealth in the late 18th century with his inventions and industrial activity.
