St. David’s is a small residential community a part of Wayne, Pennsylvania, that has recently experienced a surge of residents flowing in from Philadelphia, increasing their population. Within its boundaries lies their own train station as well as the main campus for Eastern University, a well-known liberal arts university.
The residential community was named after St. Davids Church, a historic 18th-century church named after the Patron Saint of Wales.
St. Davids Church
Following the establishment of the Welsh Tract for the settlers of Pennsylvania, the area was inhabited by a large number of Welsh immigrants, particularly Welsh Quakers. Aside from the Quakers, Welsh immigrants with other religious backgrounds also came to Pennsylvania for more opportunities.
In the early 1700s, a log-style church was constructed and underwent tons of renovation and restoration over the 17th and 18th centuries. Some known modifications were the addition of a staircase, relocation of the altar, a new main entry door, and much more.
Along with the old church also comes the historic graveyard on the National Register of Historic Places. The graveyard is open to the public and is often seen with residents walking around the gravesite or sitting amongst the trees.
Eastern University
Located within St. Davids is the private Baptist Eastern University. It was founded in 1925 to help provide a theological and conservative education system for students. The main campus consists of 114 acres west of Philly and usually has around 3,300 students enrolled annually.
Over the years since its foundation, the size of the campus continues to expand as nearby buildings are purchased for expansion. The university also has additional locations throughout the surrounding area, such as Center City and Harrisburg, PA.
