History

English settlers arrived in the 17th century in southeastern Connecticut with conflict around the Pequot people, Mohegan tribe, and another Native American tribe. Once the boundaries of New London were defined in 1646, a part of what is now Montville, was surrounded by the Oxoboxo River.

Montville broke away from New London in 1786 and became its own distinct town. Within Montville, lies four places listed on the National Register of Historic Places:
