Located on the North End of Hartford, the capital of Connecticut, the Upper Albany Historic District is surrounded by residential housing where lots of families enjoy taking strolls down the historic avenues. The historic district was built in the early 20th century and was designed based on the Colonial Revival period and Queen Anne. The district was added in 1986 to the National Register of Historic Places.

History

Albany Avenue was built as a roadway linking Hartford and Albany, New York, in the early 1800s. The northern section of the city was originally countryside, and it was here in the second half of the nineteenth century that a number of rich Hartford entrepreneurs established country homes. Soon after, the city became a rapidly growing community, with the population rises annually. With more people settling in the community came a need for more housing. The houses were built to cater to the city’s rapidly increasing middle class, and they had higher quality characteristics than ordinary housing of the time.

After World War I, the culture of Albany Avenue shifted dramatically and was primarily turned commercial, with some historic homes demolished to make room for companies and shop storefronts erected to other properties. Because of the close-knit communities that had been established, the majority of the property owners in the region by 1920 were of Irish or Jewish descent. One of the most popular parks that attracted visitors was Keney Park, which was founded in 1898 with a donation from industrialist Henry Keney.
