This 615-acre city of Asylum Hill is located near Harford, Connecticut, and is directly above the prominent Downtown Harford. Asylum Hill encompasses about 10,500 residents and was previously known as “Lords Hill.” The name formed from the original settlers that came in the early 1800s and turned the land into farmland.

Background

Established in 1807, the Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf was founded by the American School for the Deaf as the first one in the country. That location remained open for nearly 100 years and is where the area got its name Asylum Hill. Alice Cogswell was the first enrolled student in the school and was later represented in a statute for remembrance and honor.

Later in 1853, politicians Francis Gillette and John Hooker decided to purchase a chunk of land with the intention of building real estates properties and businesses to help enrich the economy. After the initial building proposal, many activists and other prominent figures became developing their own homes including but not limited to:

  • Mark Twain
  • Harriet Beecher Stowe
  • The Gillettes
  • Charles Dudley Warner

Major insurance businesses began relocating from downtown to Asylum Hill in the 1920s, resulting in significant changes in office space. The Hartford was the first big company to set up shop in the area, followed by Rossia Insurance Company and Aetna. Blocks of single-family houses were gradually replaced with apartment buildings with compact flats to create a path for business headquarters, employee parking, and lodging.

A number of notable religious organizations, including the Asylum Hill Congregational Church and the Trinity Episcopal Church, are located in the area, many of which date from the 19th-century residential period.
