Political Background
Montgomery County has traditionally been a bastion for Republicans. Barbara Hafer won the sole county in the 1990 gubernatorial election, defeating longtime governor Bob Casey. However, over the last quarter-century, the Democratic Party has made headway in the county, claiming the registration advantage early in 2008.
For much of the twentieth century, Montgomery County’s Conservatism was moderate, as it was in the majority of Philadelphia’s neighborhoods. As the national parties have become more divided, county voters have become more supportive of Democrats on a national scale.
Today, the county’s majority of voters are Democratic and that seems to remain the trend as the years go by since the 2016 election.
