History

Mount Washington sits on a hill within Pittsburgh near the southern slopes of the Monongahela River and the Ohio River.  It was also once known as Coal Hill, but Coal Hill was actually located on the south side of the Monongahela River.

Several mines were able to operate along the base of Mt. Washington due to easy access to the Pittsburgh coal seam’s outcrop. The establishment of the Allegheny County Courthouse was built using gray sandstone that was mined from the coal mines.

By 1876, the name had been changed to Mount Washington, and the first view of Pittsburgh was sketched from Mount Washington the following year. Because of the altitude of the hill, residents have unparallel, gorgeous views of the skyline, the river valley, and all of Downtown Pittsburgh.

Mount Washington Grounds

The land where Mount Washington is located was once made up of all switchback routes with steep slopes designed for carriages and travelers moving through Pittsburgh. By the early nineteenth century, primarily German immigrants had colonized Mount Washington and worked in the factories along the Monongahela River.

Workers became exhausted from the commute to and from the factories and decided to construct an incline to help with travel. Soon after, the Monongahela Incline was built in 1869, making it the first include that carried passengers to and from the industrial and residential areas. The Duquesne Incline and the Castle Shannon Incline followed soon after in the mid-1900s to assist in commuting the growing population in Mount Washington.

Today, tourists can take the scenic ride up either the Monongahela or Duquesne inclines for extraordinary Pittsburgh views, along with catching a ride to the nearest attractions, entertainment, shopping, or Station Square.
