About
Opened in 1952, the Little Gallery’s grand opening located on Manning Street was established by Janet Fleisher and her former classmate. The gallery was formed to help showcase artwork from up-and-coming local artists and well-known, more prominent artists in Philly.
My the mid-1960’s, Fleisher became the sole owner of the gallery for nearly 10 years until hiring John Ollman in 1970. Together, they worked on expanding the gallery to offering art programs and workshops and expanding their collections to include African, fold, Oceanic, pre-Columbian, European, American, and Native American art.
The gallery gained a reputation as one of the world’s foremost outlets for self-taught art over the next four decades, helping to identify the discipline and create large public and private collections. Renowned artistic works by Sister Gertrude Morgan, Bill Traylor, Henry Darger, Martin Ramirez, William Edmondson, James Castle, and much more can be seen on display in the gallery.
In 1997, Ollman became the sole owner of the gallery and decided to add contemporary programs to push the boundaries of the art gallery. Since then, Fleisher/Ollman has made huge contributions to helping self-taught artists become seen and appreciated locally and nationally.
