John James Audubon Center

wildlife museum near adoption agency in philly

The adoption agency in Philly, Pennsylvania, from Adoptions From The Heart, has sponsored this article for your enjoyment.

Located on the grounds of a historic 18th-century site, the Center belonged to a French immigrant John James Audubon who came to America at the age of eighteen in 1803. Audubon spent his free time creating hundreds of life-size portraits of birds, and eventually became known as the world’s best wildlife artist.

John’s most influential work called “The Birds of America” helped inspire the creation of the National Audubon Society. Today, the Center includes the original farmhouse that was built in 1762, a new building that features both indoor and outdoor exhibits that focus on birds, arts, and conservation.

The site also includes miles of spectacular nature trails that go along the Perkiomen Creek for visitors to explore.

Visit

Tour Audubon’s historic house located at Mill Grove, where you can walk in his footsteps and explore the stone farmhouse. Inside the home, you’ll find a variety of artifacts that belonged to Audubon as well as his original paintings.

The new building houses the museum’s variety of exhibits and experiences for visitors to explore. Check out the interactive exhibits such as WOW Birds! Gallery and Sound Forest where you can listen to the different types of bird sounds and learn about habitats, nests, and conservation.

Trails

With over 200 acres of land, take your time and explore the five miles of nature trails that are open from dusk to dawn. Be sure to bring a pair of binoculars if you want to catch a glimpse of more than 175 species of birds that reside on the grounds.
