History

After the steel industry collapsed in 1988, a group of residents came together to voice their concerns regarding the importance of maintaining the closed mills, a vital piece of the community culture. Within a few years, a task force was established, called Rivers of Steel, a non-profit organization that strived to continue telling the stories of men and women who worked for these steel industries before they diminished.

Upon the crash of the steel industry, workers that gave their lives to their job lost everything. Telling their stories and the impact the steel crisis had was a necessary component for the organization. Through the use of artifacts and remnants, a lot of history was captured and able to be displayed in the Rivers of Steel National Historic Landmark for museumgoers to discover.
