This working-class neighborhood of Frog Hollow is a part of the capital of Connecticut, Hartford. Its boundaries lie between Capitol Avenue, Lafayette Street, Madison Street, and Hamilton Street and go along Highway 84. The area was built approximately around 1850 to 1930, and there is still a significant amount of residential housing from that era. The National Register of Historic Places has designated the whole neighborhood, spanning over 150 acres and including over 900 structures.

Historic Background

Today, Broad Street and Ward Street were previously part of the lower portion of Frog Hollow known for its marshy environment, hence how the neighborhood got its name. Up until 1852, the majority of the land was purely farmland but was later turned into the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company’s factory. Surprisingly enough, the Sharp was not the first company to develop a factory in Frog Hollow but was specifically built upon the now dried-up Park River to take advantage of the railroad that was built 20 years prior.

Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company unfortunately failed and went bankrupt after being in business for nearly 20 years and was taken over by the Weed Sewing Machine Company. Around the same time in the mid-1800s, residential construction began to boom, and tons of homes were designed with a Greek Revival style. Soon after, a large development of more housing, schools, churches, buildings, and complexes started growing in the early 1900s.

Some of the most prominent establishments that still stand today are as follows:

  • Hartford Superior Court
  • Hartford Community Court & Family Court
  • Trinity College
  • The Learning Corridor
  • Hartford Hospital
  • Connecticut Children’s Medical Center
  • The Lyceum Resource and Conference Hall
