History

Located in Allegheny County, Millvale is a borough in Pittsburgh along the Allegheny River and the intersection of Girthys Run. It borders Shaler Township, Reserve Township, and Troy Hill.

Millvale was founded around iron makers, sawmills, stone quarries, lumber mills, and breweries. Originally the Duquesne borough that was disincorporated in 1868, the downriver of Allegheny City was joined with adjacent land to form what is the borough of Millvale today.

Demographics

Statistics from the United States Census in 2000 shared that there was an estimated population of 4,028 people, of which were 1,839 households and 959 families within the Millvale boundaries. The racial diversity of the borough was the following:

  • 97% White
  • 0.97% African American or Black
  • 0.20% Native American
  • 0.17% Asian
  • 0.89% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.67% other races

The median household income from the same statistics was about $26,509 and slightly more at $30,478 for families’ median income.

Recreational Activities

Millvale is home to their prominent Millvale Riverfront Park that provides access to PNC Park, Heinz Field, Pittsburgh’s North Shore, and the Three Rivers Heritage Trail. The Riverfront also offers park visitors 1.7 miles worth of walking and biking trails with gorgeous views of the river.

Mr. Smalls Skate Park, bike and boat rentals, Millvale Marina, kayak and rowing boat launch access, fishing, a tackle and bait shop, and more are among the park’s other attractions.

In August, the Riverfront Park hosts the immensely popular annual BrewFest, and in the fall, the newly inaugurated, well-crafted Harvest Moon Wine Festival.

In recent years, the Millvale Community Library has launched several projects for the community to partake in, such as the creation of the first public library in Millvale, garden spaces, and multi-use recreational spaces.
