The Children’s Museum
Known as the fifth oldest children’s museum in the United States, The Children’s Museum is run by a non-profit educational organization that was founded in 1927. What was originally a small one-room historical museum inside The Pond House at Elizabeth Park, the museum has since moved to what is today’s current location in 1957.
Exhibits
The museum contains nine exhibits for families to explore, each with its own unique interactive and entertainment displays. These include:
- Amazing Amphibians – Jump right into the fascinating world of frogs, toads, newts, and salamanders. Guests are invited to explore the lifecycles of these unique species through interactive activities and a vibrant maze.
- Wildlife Sanctuary – The Wildlife Sanctuary at the Children’s Museum is one of several organizations around the country that provide safe haven for animals and gives animals a second opportunity who might otherwise be abandoned or neglected.
- Dinosaurs in your Backyard – Through footprints, fossils, bones, and other artifacts, visitors will be able to learn about dinosaurs that lived in Connecticut during the Jurassic Period.
- Lizard Lair – Lizard Lair is a place where you can learn about scaly critters.
- Critter Crossing – The youngest explorers and their caretakers may make great discoveries in this imaginative play zone.
- Pendulum Staircase – The Foucault Pendulum hangs 45-feet tall and offers impressive images of astronomy in a classic display.
- Kids Can Compost – Children have the opportunity to understand what compost is and how they can help.
- Conny The Whale – Typically open during the summer, Conny the 60-foot long sperm whale is a popular exhibit amongst the children because of the water that spouts out of his blowhole.
- Winged Wonders Butterfly House – Opened only seasonally, the butterfly exhibit offers a gorgeous green garden, the perfect natural environment for an assortment of butterflies for you to see.
