Situated in Hartford County, Connecticut, Bristol is about 20 miles from the capital of Hartford. Bristol is known as the hub of ESPN and offers one of the oldest operating amusement parks in America, Lake Compounce.
History
The Tunxis Native American tribe, one of the Eastern Algonquian-speaking people, first settled on the land that is known as Bristol today. Upon its incorporation in 1645, the area in which Bristol was situated was placed within the borders of Farmington, Connecticut. Confirmed deeds have shared that a few of the first settlers who built houses in Bristol were:
- Daniel Brownson
- Ebenezer Barnes
- Nehemiah Manross
- Nathaniel Messenger
- Benjamin Buck
Nearly a century later, New Cambridge became incorporated as the town of Bristol, which was named after the city Bristol in England. In 1790, Gideon Roberts made the town famous after his pioneering of clock manufacturing.
Gideon expanded production as Roberts’ son got older and began assisting with the company, and Bristol clocks were soon sold all throughout the country. By the early nineteenth century, virtually all of the town’s wealth and talent had been invested in the clock business in some way.
Demographics
Statistics from the United States Census of 2010 shared that there was a population of 60,477 individuals, 25,189 households, and 16,175 families within Bristol. The racial diversity of the town can be broken down as the following:
- 87.74% White
- 3.84% African American and Black
- 9.64% Hispanic or Latino
- 0.19% Native American
- 1.94% Asian
- 0.02% Pacific Islander
- 2.54% other races
The average household income was about $57,610, and the per capita income for Bristol was about $30,573.
