Strawberry Mansion is a neighborhood in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, located in the northern part of the city. The Schuylkill River and East Fairmount Park form the western border, and Brewerytown, Glenwood, Allegheny West, and Parkwood are the neighboring regions. Ridge Avenue, West Diamond Street, Cecil B. Moore Avenue, West Glenwood Avenue, and West Lehigh Avenue are a few of the community’s key thoroughfares.

Historic Background

Strawberry Mansion was once known as an expensive suburban neighborhood called Summerville, with home prices going well above the average for the area. The name was later changed to Strawberry Mansion due to the historic home built for Judge William Lewis in the late 18th century. Over the years, the home belonged to various prominent and wealthy families and was later refurbished into a popular town restaurant known for its strawberries and cream in the 1850s. Upon closure of the restaurant, it was then restored into a museum and visitor facility by the non-profit organization, The Committee of 1926.

The neighborhood’s history contains challenges that have earned it the distinction of being the city’s most violent neighborhood. The community’s downhill spiral began in the 1950s and 1960s with urban and economic collapse. Home prices plummeted to their lowest levels in the city, and even the police started to ignore some districts. Since then, the cost of real estate has begun to rise, but the crime rates have not declined. To help gentrify the area, the city began opening a variety of parks, recreational facilities, youth activities, and other family-friend amenities.
