West Boulevard Historic District
The iconic West Boulevard Historic District is a well-known historic district with tons of ongoing and growing residential development within Hartford, Connecticut. Beginning in 1909, the region was developed, and the majority of the residences were built by a single construction business, resulting in a neighborhood image that was united by style, size, and placement, following the concepts of the then-fashionable City Beautiful movement. Later in 2007, the historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
History
In the late 1900s, Horace Fox, the owner of a lumber business, owned a beautiful country estate on the land where West Boulevard sits, which happened to be the last available space for purchase on the West End area. Fox began thinking about ideas for the land’s development as early as 1896 when he saw potential paths for West Boulevard on old maps. He then envisioned a large parkway stretching from Prospect Avenue to Forest Street, in conjunction with the concepts of the City Beautiful movement.
Only the western half of this idea was ever executed within the West Boulevard Historic District. In the 1910s and 1920s, Fox sold off home lots primarily to developers, who subsequently built houses and sold them to mainly affluent individuals.
The historic area includes blocks of West Boulevard and about 1⁄2 block north on Rodney Street, which was established around the same period. The scale and distance from the road, as well as the wood-frame structure, tie the houses together. They’re also aesthetically similar, with the majority being built in that era’s ever-so-popular Colonial Revival style.
