The neighborhood of Manayunk is located in Northwest Philly near Wissahickon and Roxborough along the Schuylkill River. The name Manayunk came from the Lenape Indians who originally inhabited the land before William Penn.
Despite its history as a working-class neighborhood, the area has seen significant gentrification in recent years. While the area still maintains a working-class population, it has moved to younger, upper-middle-class professionals and their families. Manayunk’s nightlife also attracts people from around the Delaware Valley, as well as tourists.

Statistics from the United States Census in 2010 shared that there were an estimated 5,913 individuals, 2,767 households, and 769 families residing in Manayunk. The racial diversity of the neighborhood is made up of the following:

- 2.4% Hispanic or Latino
- 1.7% two or more races
Community
Manayunk is made up of a variety of diverse ethnic backgrounds from German, Polish, Irish, Italians, and many more. A majority of Catholic churches within the neighborhood were established by the immigrants that first settled, such as:
- St. John the Baptist – Irish
- St. Lucy’s – Italian
- St. Mary’s – German
- St. Josaphat’s – Polish
There are also a variety of Protestant churches that have been established throughout the area.
Within the historic district lies 60 or more boutiques, shops, restaurants, bars, nightlife, galleries, and much more. Some favorites amongst locals are Pretzel Park which runs a weekly farmer’s market from May to November, an eclectic bookstore, The Spiral Bookcase, and many others. The neighborhood is also home to Philly’s large art district and hosts the annual Manayunk Arts Festival that draws over 200,000 visitors annually. Many of these visitors are designers, art buyers, and collectors.
