History
Located in New Haven County, Connecticut, Meriden dated back to the 18th century and was originally a part of the neighboring town, Wallingford. In 1727, it was granted its own meetinghouse, and in 1806 it was founded as a town with over 1000 people. In 1867, it was constituted as a city with just under 9000 citizens. Meriden acquired its name from a hamlet located in the West Midlands of England, named Meriden.
The Solomon Goffe House is known as the oldest house still standing and was constructed by Solomon Goffe in 1711 and became a museum in 1986.
19th Century
Meriden became a manufacturing center of distinction in the second half of the 1800s. Various enterprises created or migrated to the city, mostly producing silver, lamps and metalware, glassware, weapons, and musical instruments. A large amount of technology and design patented came out during this time and were secured. The most common items that were manufactured during this timer were:

In the middle of World War II, Edwin Howard Armstrong created the FM radio, which blew up as a huge sensation, allowing listeners to tune in to the latest news broadcasts. In the late 1940s, the Miller Company, Burton Tremaine, Sr., and Emily Hall Tremaine firmly established Meriden on the world’s 20th-century art/design map.
